The A-Skip is a rhythmic skipping drill that practices knee drive, foot placement, and arm coordination for running. It adds a small hop to an alternating high-knee march.

How to do it

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart and elbows bent roughly 90 degrees.
  2. Lift one knee toward waist height.
  3. Swing the opposite arm forward.
  4. Make a small forward hop on your supporting foot.
  5. Land on that same supporting foot.
  6. Place the raised foot down beneath your hips.
  7. Repeat on the other side, alternating continuously for the target distance.
  8. Finish by slowing to a walk.

Form cues

  • Pull your raised toes toward your shin
  • Keep your belt line level
  • Let your shoulders stay loose
  • Keep contacts quick and quiet

Common mistakes

  • Reaching forward with the footShorten your forward travel so each foot meets the ground close to your center of mass.
  • Bouncing too highUse just enough lift to create the skipping rhythm rather than trying to jump upward.
  • Leaning back during knee driveKeep your ribs over your pelvis instead of arching your back to lift the knee higher.

Safety

Repeated hopping can overload your calves or Achilles tendons if you add too much distance too soon. A missed landing on an uneven or slippery surface can twist an ankle.

  • Use a clear, level lane with reliable traction.
  • Warm up with easy walking or jogging before starting.
  • Begin with short passes before increasing total distance.
  • End the pass when fatigue disrupts your rhythm or landing control.

Choose A-March if hopping causes discomfort, and seek guidance from a physiotherapist if you have a current foot, ankle, Achilles, or knee injury.
