Aerobic Step-Up
The aerobic step-up is a repeated stepping pattern onto a low platform that builds cardiovascular endurance while working your legs and hips.
- Beginner
- Low injury risk
- Rest 30 sec
How to do it
- Stand facing the platform with your feet hip-width apart.
- Place your entire right foot on the platform.
- Step your left foot onto the platform beside your right.
- Step your right foot backward onto the floor.
- Step your left foot down beside your right.
- Repeat the sequence leading with your left foot.
- Continue alternating the lead foot for the interval.
- Finish with both feet on the floor.
Form cues
- Land softly and quietly.
- Keep your knees following your toes.
- Keep breathing steadily.
Common mistakes
- Rushing the rhythmUse a pace that lets you place each foot deliberately without shuffling or stumbling.
- Pushing off the floor footLet the leg on the platform do most of the work rather than hopping off your trailing foot.
- Excessive forward leanKeep your chest lifted instead of folding your torso toward your thighs.
Safety
Fatigue or missed foot placement can cause a trip or ankle twist. Repeated hard descents can irritate your knees or ankles.
- Secure the platform on a level, nonslip surface with clear space around it.
- Start with a low platform, around 4–6 inches high.
- End the interval if your foot starts catching the edge or your balance becomes unreliable.
If you have ongoing knee or ankle pain or balance difficulties, use a lower step with stable support or seek guidance from a physiotherapist first.
