Mobility
Ankle Dorsiflexion Rock
The ankle dorsiflexion rock is a gentle mobility exercise that moves your knee forward over a planted foot to practice ankle motion and stretch your calf.
- Beginner
- Low injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Kneel on one knee with your opposite foot flat in front, roughly beneath your front knee.
- Move your front knee forward over your toes as far as comfortable while keeping your heel down.
- Shift back until your front shin returns to its starting angle.
Form cues
- Keep your arch from collapsing inward.
- Track your knee over your middle toes.
- Let your toes stay relaxed.
Common mistakes
- Bouncing at the endUse a slow, smooth rocking motion rather than momentum to reach farther.
- Turning the foot outwardKeep your front foot pointing straight ahead throughout each repetition.
Safety
Forcing extra range can irritate the front of your ankle or strain your calf. Pressure from kneeling may also bother your rear knee.
- Stop if you feel sharp pain or pinching rather than a mild calf stretch.
- Place padding under your rear knee if the floor feels uncomfortable.
- Use a wall for support if you feel unsteady.
If you have a recent ankle injury, ankle surgery, or persistent joint pain, get guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before using this drill.
