How to do it

  1. Sit on a stable submerged seat at a depth that keeps your lower leg underwater throughout the movement.
  2. Secure the aquatic resistance cuff just above your ankle according to its fitting instructions.
  3. Position your thigh on the seat with your knee bent and your lower leg free to move.
  4. Straighten your knee until your leg is nearly straight.
  5. Bend your knee slowly back to the starting position.

Form cues

  • Keep your thigh still.
  • Sit tall without leaning back.
  • Exhale as you straighten.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking too fastUse an even pace rather than a sudden kick, which sharply increases water resistance.
  • Snapping the knee straightFinish the extension gently without forcing your knee into lockout.
  • Cuff sliding aroundRefit the cuff so it stays in place without pinching or causing numbness.

Safety

Excessive resistance or forced straightening can aggravate your knee. The cuff can also disrupt your balance when moving around the pool, especially on slippery steps.

  • Start with a low-resistance cuff before increasing its size or drag.
  • Use a secure handhold when getting into position.
  • Remove the cuff from a stable seated position before walking or leaving the pool.
  • Stop the set if you feel sharp pain or lose control of the movement.

If you have ongoing knee pain, recent knee surgery, or difficulty balancing in water, ask a physiotherapist about a suitable range and resistance before starting.
