Aquatic Weighted Knee Extension
Aquatic Weighted Knee Extension trains the front of your thigh by straightening a bent knee in water, lifting a sinking ankle weight forward and upward while your thigh stays raised.
- Beginner
- Isolation
- Low injury risk
- Rest 1 min
How to do it
- Secure a pool-safe sinking cuff weight around one ankle.
- Stand beside a pool rail in waist- to chest-deep water.
- Grip the rail for support.
- Raise your weighted thigh forward toward horizontal, with your knee bent and your foot hanging below it.
- Straighten your working knee to lift your foot forward and upward.
- Lower your foot by bending your knee, keeping your raised thigh still.
- Return your working foot to the pool floor after the final repetition.
Form cues
- Keep your ribs over your hips.
- Leave a soft bend at the top.
- Exhale as your foot rises.
Common mistakes
- Dropping the thighShorten the knee movement if you cannot maintain the raised-thigh position throughout the repetition.
- Swinging the foot upwardPause briefly at the bottom so each lift starts without momentum.
- Letting the weight fallResist the cuff's downward pull so the lowering phase stays slow and controlled.
Safety
An overly heavy cuff or abrupt knee straightening can strain your knee. The ankle weight can also disrupt balance and make recovering from a slip harder in water.
- Put the cuff on and remove it from a stable seated position before entering or leaving the exercise area.
- Use a depth where you can keep your head above water with one foot firmly planted.
- Start with the lightest cuff available.
- Do not swim or move into deep water while wearing sinking weights.
If you have knee or hip pain, difficulty balancing, or limited water confidence, use a supported seated version or seek guidance from a physiotherapist first.
