Arc Barrel Side Bend

The Arc Barrel Side Bend is a supported Pilates exercise that trains the side abdominal muscles as you lower your torso over a curved surface and lift it back into line.

  • Intermediate
  • Isolation
  • Low injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Lie sideways over the barrel with the curve supporting your waist and lower ribs.
  2. Extend your legs sideways with your feet staggered on the floor for balance.
  3. Cross your arms over your chest.
  4. Lower your torso sideways over the curve through a comfortable range.
  5. Lift your torso until it lines up with your legs.
  6. Repeat on the opposite side after completing your reps.

Form cues

  • Keep your hips stacked.
  • Leave space between chin and chest.
  • Exhale as you lift.
  • Keep the movement smooth.

Common mistakes

  • Twisting instead of bending sidewaysKeep your chest facing forward rather than turning toward the floor or ceiling.
  • Lifting into a tight side crunchFinish the lift at a straight body line rather than drawing your shoulder toward your hip.
  • Throwing the head upwardLet your head follow your torso instead of leading the lift.

Safety

Forcing the bend or continuing when fatigued can strain your back or side abdominal muscles. A sliding barrel or unstable foot position can cause you to lose balance.

  • Place the barrel on a nonslip surface before starting.
  • Check that your feet stay firmly grounded during a small test repetition.
  • Begin with a short range of motion rather than dropping into a deep stretch.
  • End the set if you feel pain or can no longer control the lowering phase.

If you have back or rib pain, recent abdominal surgery, or difficulty balancing on the barrel, choose a standing version or seek guidance from a physiotherapist first.
