Backstroke with Fins

Backstroke with fins pairs alternating arm strokes with a fin-assisted flutter kick while you swim on your back. It trains swimming endurance and helps you practice body alignment and rotation.

How to do it

  1. Put on snug-fitting swim fins while seated at the pool edge.
  2. Lower yourself into the water beside the wall.
  3. Push away from the wall on your back with your arms beside you.
  4. Start a small, continuous flutter kick from your hips.
  5. Sweep one arm over the water to enter above its shoulder, little finger first.
  6. Press water toward your feet with a bent elbow until your hand reaches your hip.
  7. Continue alternating arms through this stroke cycle for the prescribed distance.
  8. Take hold of the wall to finish your length.

Form cues

  • Roll your shoulders and hips together
  • Keep your ankles relaxed
  • Let your head rest in the water
  • Breathe regularly; don't hold your breath

Common mistakes

  • Bicycle-style kickingKeep knee bend small so your fins sweep up and down rather than pedal through the water.
  • Rushing the arm strokesUse a steady arm rhythm rather than chasing the extra speed your fins provide.
  • Slapping the water on entryLet your hand slice into the water instead of striking it with a rigid arm.

Safety

Fins increase speed while you cannot see directly ahead, raising the chance of hitting a wall or another swimmer. Fatigue can compromise water safety, and forceful fin kicking can strain your ankles or calves.

  • Use a lifeguarded pool and follow the lane's swimming direction.
  • Establish your wall approach using backstroke flags or another reliable reference; slow down before reaching the wall.
  • Start with short lengths at an easy pace before adding distance.
  • Stop at the nearest safe support if you develop cramping, pain, or unusual breathlessness.

If you cannot comfortably float on your back and swim a pool length without fins, practice those skills in supervised shallow water first.
