Backward Sled Drag

The backward sled drag is a resisted backward walk that trains your thighs through repeated knee extension while building lower-body work capacity.

  • Beginner
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 1 min

How to do it

  1. Fit the harness snugly according to its instructions.
  2. Connect the sled tether to a harness attachment designed for backward dragging.
  3. Face the sled with enough distance between you to make the tether taut.
  4. Lower your hips slightly with a small bend in your knees.
  5. Walk backward using short, controlled steps for the prescribed time.
  6. Gradually shorten your steps to bring the sled to a stop.
  7. Step toward the stationary sled to release tether tension.

Form cues

  • Keep your chest tall.
  • Track your knees over your toes.
  • Keep steady tension on the tether.
  • Breathe steadily throughout.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping into a deep squatUse a shallow knee bend so you can keep walking smoothly rather than shuffling from a low squat.
  • Leaning far backwardKeep your torso mostly upright rather than hanging your body weight against the harness.
  • Twisting to watch behind youCheck your route before starting or have someone guide you so your torso stays facing the sled.

Safety

Walking backward can lead to trips or collisions because you cannot easily see the route. Excessive resistance or fatigue can strain your knees or lower back as your posture breaks down.

  • Use a clear, level lane with extra stopping space.
  • Distribute the sled load evenly and check all harness connections before starting.
  • Start light; sled resistance changes substantially with the surface.
  • End the set if you stumble, lose control of your steps, or feel pain.

If you have balance problems or current knee or back pain, seek advice from a physiotherapist before adding resistance.
