Band-Resisted Back Squat
The band-resisted back squat trains your legs and hips with a barbell plus anchored bands. The bands add more resistance as you stand, making the top of the squat heavier.
Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it
- Attach matched bands from the rack’s lower band pegs to equal positions on the bar sleeves.
- Position the bar across your upper back with a firm, even grip.
- Stand to lift the bar clear of the hooks.
- Step back into a roughly shoulder-width stance with your toes slightly outward.
- Squat down between your hips to the deepest position you can control without rounding your back.
- Stand up until your hips and knees are straight.
- Walk forward until the bar is directly above both rack hooks.
- Lower the bar into the hooks.
Form cues
- Brace before each descent.
- Keep pressure across your whole foot.
- Keep the bar over your midfoot.
- Exhale near the top.
Common mistakes
- Dropping into the bottomControl your descent rather than letting band tension accelerate you downward.
- Knees collapsing inwardKeep your knees tracking in the direction of your toes throughout the rep.
- Hips rising before the chestRaise your chest and hips together so the squat does not become a forward bend.
Safety
Uneven or slipping bands can pull the loaded bar off balance. Excessive combined resistance or fatigue can cause you to stall under the bar, placing your back and knees at risk.
- Use a securely anchored rack with safeties set just below your squat depth.
- Inspect bands for damage; check that they remain secure, evenly tensioned, and slightly taut at the bottom without pulling you forward or backward.
- Secure plates with collars; test the setup with a light bar load and light bands before adding resistance.
- Finish with reps in reserve, and remove band tension only after the bar is fully supported in both hooks, before unloading plates.
Choose an unbanded squat if your back squat is not consistent, or seek professional guidance first if squatting causes back, hip, or knee pain.
