Bar Muscle-Up
The bar muscle-up combines a swinging pull, a transition over the bar, and a press to straight arms. It trains upper-body pulling and pressing strength, grip, and coordination.

How to do it
- Grasp the bar slightly wider than shoulder width with palms facing away from you.
- Hang with straight elbows and your feet clear of the floor.
- Start a small swing from a slight arch into a hollow shape, with your ribs tucked and feet forward.
- Pull explosively toward your hips as your feet swing forward.
- Lean your chest over the bar as your wrists rotate into a support position.
- Press down on the bar until your elbows straighten above it.
- Lower yourself under control through the transition to return to a hang.
Form cues
- Keep your legs together.
- Keep the bar close.
- Turn both elbows over together.
- Finish tall, not shrugged.
Common mistakes
- Pulling only to chin heightAim to bring your lower chest above bar height before attempting the turnover.
- Using an oversized kipReduce the swing until you can maintain a firm trunk without a large lower-back arch.
- Throwing your head forward too earlyWait until your torso has enough height to clear the bar before leaning over it.
Safety
A missed transition or lost grip can cause a fall onto the bar or floor. Forceful swinging and uncontrolled lowering can overload your shoulders, elbows, or wrists, especially when fatigued.
- Use a securely mounted bar with clear space above, below, and around your swing path.
- Wrap your thumbs around the bar with a dry, secure grip.
- Build controlled pull-ups, high pulls, and straight-bar dips before attempting the full movement.
- End the set before grip or transition control deteriorates; use a stable platform for a planned dismount.
Choose preparatory pulling exercises if you lack the required strength, and seek physiotherapist advice first if hanging or support positions cause shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain.
