How to do it

  1. Start in front support on the low rail, with straight arms, hands slightly wider than your hips, and legs together.
  2. Shift your shoulders slightly forward of your hands.
  3. Cast your legs backward just enough to lift your hips away from the rail.
  4. Draw both knees toward your chest as your hips rise.
  5. Place the balls of both feet together on the rail between your hands.
  6. Stabilize in a compact squat while maintaining your hand grip.
  7. Return to the mat using the assisted exit arranged before your attempt.

Form cues

  • Push tall through your shoulders.
  • Look just ahead of the rail.
  • Keep your abdomen firm.

Common mistakes

  • Casting too highUse a small cast that gives you only enough clearance to bring your feet onto the rail.
  • Tucking too lateStart drawing your knees in while your hips are still rising, rather than waiting until they drop.
  • Feet landing unevenlyBring both knees toward your chest at the same rate so your feet contact the rail together.

Safety

Missing the rail or tipping past your hands can cause a head-first fall. A foot slipping while your hands remain fixed can also strain your wrists or shoulders.

  • Practice only with a qualified gymnastics instructor providing hands-on spotting.
  • Check that the apparatus is secure and landing mats cover the fall area without gaps.
  • Agree on an assisted exit before mounting; do not improvise a jump or high-bar transition.
  • End practice when fatigue makes your support position or foot placement unreliable.

If you have wrist or shoulder pain, or cannot maintain straight-arm front support, use supported preparatory drills before attempting this skill.
