Barre Plié
The barre plié is a supported knee bend with your feet turned outward. It trains your thighs while practicing upright posture, balance, and controlled movement.

- Compound
- Low injury risk
- Rest 30 sec
How to do it
- Stand side-on to the barre with one hand resting lightly on it.
- Place your heels together or slightly apart with your toes turned outward at a comfortable angle.
- Bend both knees to lower your body vertically while keeping your heels on the floor.
- Straighten your legs to return to standing without locking your knees.
Form cues
- Keep your knees pointing over your toes.
- Keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
- Exhale as you rise.
Common mistakes
- Forcing a wide turnoutUse a smaller foot angle that comes from rotating at your hips rather than twisting your knees or feet.
- Rolling onto the inner feetMaintain contact through each heel, big-toe base, and little-toe base throughout the movement.
- Pulling yourself up with the barreLet your legs do the lifting, using only fingertip pressure for balance.
Safety
Forced turnout or excessive depth can strain your knees or ankles, especially when fatigue makes your alignment harder to control.
- Check that the barre is secure before using it for support.
- Start with shallow repetitions before increasing your depth.
- End the set when you can no longer control your descent.
If you have knee, hip, or ankle pain, use a shallower bend with less turnout and seek guidance from a physiotherapist if discomfort persists.
