Balance Beam Arabesque Hold

The balance beam arabesque hold is a single-leg balance with your free leg extended behind you. It trains steady foot and ankle control while you maintain hip and trunk alignment.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

  • Higher injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Stand lengthwise on the beam with one foot slightly ahead of the other.
  2. Extend your arms out to the sides.
  3. Shift your weight onto your front foot.
  4. Lift your straight free leg behind you.
  5. Tilt your torso slightly forward from your hips.
  6. Hold this position for the prescribed time.
  7. Return your torso upright.
  8. Lower your free foot onto the beam behind your standing foot.

Form cues

  • Keep your hips level and facing forward.
  • Keep your standing knee soft.
  • Look at one fixed point.
  • Keep your toes long, not clenched.

Common mistakes

  • Arching to lift the leg higherKeep your ribs over your pelvis and lower the raised leg until your lower back stops arching.
  • Standing knee collapsing inwardKeep your standing knee pointing in the same direction as your toes.
  • Chasing balance with large movementsUse small ankle adjustments rather than swinging your arms or free leg.

Safety

Losing balance on a raised beam can cause a fall or ankle injury, especially when fatigue reduces control. A higher beam increases the consequences of a missed step.

  • Begin on a floor line or floor-level beam before practicing at height.
  • Place gymnastics landing mats around the beam without gaps.
  • Keep the landing area clear of equipment and other people.
  • End the hold before shaking or repeated balance corrections make a controlled exit difficult.

Choose floor-level practice or seek advice from a physiotherapist first if you have recurring ankle instability, dizziness, or pain during single-leg standing.
