How to do it
- Stand facing along the beam with one foot ahead of the other, arms open to the sides.
- Shift your weight onto your front foot.
- Rise onto the ball of your supporting foot.
- Lift your free foot beside your supporting knee, with the raised knee pointing forward.
- Sweep your arms into a rounded position in front of your chest to initiate the turn.
- Rotate one full circle on the ball of your supporting foot.
- Lower your supporting heel to the beam.
- Place your free foot back on the beam in a still, balanced finish.
Form cues
- Grow tall through your head
- Keep ribs stacked over your pelvis
- Keep your supporting knee softly straight
Common mistakes
- Throwing the shoulders into the turnUse a smaller arm sweep so your upper body does not pull you off balance.
- Free leg swinging outwardKeep your free leg close to your body throughout the rotation.
- Forcing the last quarter-turnReturn to half-turn practice until you can finish without hopping or twisting on a stuck foot.
Safety
Losing balance during rotation can cause a fall onto the beam or floor, especially at height. Twisting while the supporting foot sticks can strain the ankle or knee.
- Learn the movement on a floor line before progressing to a low beam.
- Use a stable beam with suitable landing mats covering the surrounding area without gaps.
- Practice a controlled step-off from a low beam before attempting full turns.
- End the set when fatigue makes your supporting ankle wobble or your finishes uncontrolled.
If you have ankle or knee pain, recurrent ankle instability, or dizziness with turns, seek advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before practicing on a beam.
