Balance Beam Relevé Walk

The balance beam relevé walk is a forward walk on the balls of your feet with your heels raised. It trains foot and ankle control, calf endurance, and balance on a narrow surface.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Stand on the beam with both feet pointing along its length, one slightly ahead of the other.
  2. Lift your heels to balance on the balls of your feet.
  3. Place your trailing foot a short distance ahead, landing on the ball of that foot.
  4. Transfer your weight onto the forward foot with your heels still raised.
  5. Advance the opposite foot in the same way for the next step.
  6. Stop in a balanced stance after your final step.
  7. Lower your heels onto the beam.

Form cues

  • Look ahead at a fixed point.
  • Reach your arms out to the sides.
  • Keep your ribs stacked over your hips.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling onto the outer footKeep pressure through the base of your big toe rather than letting your ankle tip outward.
  • Forcing maximum heel heightUse a heel height you can maintain steadily rather than rising as high as possible.
  • Rushing the weight transferLet your weight settle over each supporting foot before starting the next step.

Safety

Losing your footing can cause a fall or ankle sprain, with greater consequences on an elevated beam. Fatigue can reduce ankle control and increase strain on your calves and Achilles tendons.

  • Practice on a floor line or floor-level beam before using an elevated beam.
  • Place gymnastics landing mats around the beam with no gaps in the landing area.
  • Check that the beam is stable and its surface is dry before starting.
  • End the set when your ankles begin wobbling or your heel height becomes difficult to control.

Choose flat-footed beam walking or seek advice from a physiotherapist first if you have ankle instability, foot or Achilles pain, or dizziness that affects your balance.
