Balance Beam Split Jump

The balance beam split jump is a two-foot jump with a front-to-back split in the air and a two-foot landing on the beam. It trains leg power, balance, and control in the air.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Stand facing along the beam with your feet close together, one slightly ahead of the other.
  2. Move your arms behind your body.
  3. Bend your hips and knees into a shallow dip.
  4. Jump straight up from both feet with an upward arm swing.
  5. Open your straight legs into a front-to-back split along the beam.
  6. Bring both legs back beneath your hips before touching down.
  7. Land on both feet with softly bent knees.
  8. Straighten into a balanced standing position.

Form cues

  • Keep your hips square.
  • Look toward the beam’s far end.
  • Keep your chest lifted.
  • Point your toes in flight.

Common mistakes

  • Traveling forward on takeoffKeep your weight centered over your feet during the dip rather than leaning toward the lead leg.
  • Forcing a wider splitUse only the split range you can reach without twisting or straining.
  • Holding the split too longBegin closing your legs just after the jump’s peak so your feet are ready for landing.

Safety

Missing the narrow landing surface can cause a fall or an ankle injury, with greater consequences on a raised beam. Fatigue and an uncontrolled split increase the chance of losing your landing position.

  • Practice on a floor line or low beam before using a raised beam.
  • Secure the beam and cover the surrounding fall area with suitable gymnastics landing mats.
  • Use qualified gymnastics supervision and appropriate spotting when learning this flight skill.
  • End the set when landings become unstable rather than trying to complete more reps.

Choose a floor-based version or seek advice from a physiotherapist first if you have current ankle, knee, hip, or groin pain, or difficulty balancing.
