Block-and-Cross Counter
The block-and-cross counter is a boxing drill that links a compact rear-arm block to a straight rear-hand punch. Practiced in the air, it develops defensive timing, punching coordination, and balance.

- Compound
- Low injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Stand with your non-dominant foot forward, feet about shoulder-width apart, and knees slightly bent.
- Raise your fists beside your cheeks with your elbows close to your ribs.
- Move your rear forearm slightly inward to intercept an imagined straight punch without reaching away from your face.
- Return your rear fist to its starting guard position.
- Throw a straight rear-hand punch toward an imagined face-height target, rotating your hip forward through a pivot on the ball of your rear foot.
- Retract your rear fist along the same path to your cheek.
- Reset your original stance before the next repetition.
Form cues
- Keep your chin tucked
- Lead hand stays home
- Exhale briefly with the punch
- Keep your wrist straight
Common mistakes
- Swatting at the imagined punchMake the block a small movement just wide enough to cover the incoming line.
- Reaching for extra rangeKeep your head over your base rather than leaning beyond your front knee.
- Pausing between defense and counterLink the block, guard reset, and cross into one smooth sequence before increasing speed.
Safety
Snapping an air punch to full elbow lockout can strain your elbow or shoulder. Turning your body over a planted rear foot can stress your knee.
- Slow the punch before full extension, leaving a slight bend in your elbow.
- Use a clear practice area with footing that allows your rear foot to pivot freely.
- Start at an easy pace and end the set when you lose control of the sequence.
- Keep this version noncontact; do not aim punches at another person.
If punching or pivoting causes shoulder, elbow, back, or knee pain, use a smaller, slower movement and seek advice from a physiotherapist before progressing.
