How to do it

  1. Face the bag in a staggered stance, your non-dominant foot forward, knees slightly bent, and gloves beside your cheeks.
  2. Punch straight toward the bag with your lead hand from a distance that leaves your elbow slightly bent at contact.
  3. Return your lead glove to your cheek.
  4. Throw a straight rear-hand punch by turning your rear hip and pivoting on the ball of your rear foot.
  5. Return your rear glove to your cheek.
  6. Adjust your distance with short steps as the bag moves.
  7. Repeat the straight-punch sequence for your work interval.
  8. Step clear of the bag's return path to finish.

Form cues

  • Keep your chin tucked.
  • Stack your wrist behind your knuckles.
  • Exhale briefly with each punch.
  • Keep the non-punching hand up.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching after the bagLet the bag return to punching range rather than leaning beyond your front foot.
  • Pushing through contactMake contact briefly instead of driving the glove along with the bag.
  • Crossing your feetMove the foot nearest your direction of travel first, keeping space between your feet.

Safety

Hard impacts with poor wrist alignment can injure your hands or wrists, while reaching under fatigue can strain your shoulders. The tethered bag can rebound toward you, and its lower tether creates a trip hazard.

  • Check the upper suspension, lower anchor, and elastic tether for looseness or damage before starting.
  • Wear securely fitted hand wraps and boxing training gloves.
  • Clear the bag's full movement area; never step over or straddle the lower tether.
  • Begin with light punches to learn the return path; end the interval if technique deteriorates, pain develops, or equipment shifts.

Choose non-contact shadow boxing or seek advice from a physiotherapist before impact work if you have hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain.
