Boxer-Step Jump Rope

Boxer-step jump rope uses low hops with alternating weight shifts to train conditioning, footwork, and lower-leg endurance. One foot takes most of your weight while the other touches down lightly.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet close together, holding the rope handles with the rope resting behind your heels.
  2. Swing the rope forward over your head.
  3. Hop just high enough for the rope to pass beneath both feet.
  4. Land mainly on your left foot, with your right foot touching down lightly.
  5. Hop over the next rope pass.
  6. Land mainly on your right foot, with your left foot touching down lightly.
  7. Continue alternating your weight between feet on successive rope passes.
  8. Stop turning after your final landing, letting the rope settle on the floor.

Form cues

  • Turn from your wrists.
  • Keep elbows near your ribs.
  • Keep your knees soft.
  • Stay tall through your chest.

Common mistakes

  • Jumping side to sideShift your weight within your stance rather than traveling sideways across the floor.
  • Rushing the foot changesUse a slower rope speed until each weight shift matches one rope pass.
  • Watching your feetLook ahead at a fixed point to keep your head from dropping.

Safety

Repeated landings can overload your calves, Achilles tendons, or feet when you increase duration too quickly. Catching the rope under fatigue can cause a trip or ankle twist.

  • Check the rope for damage and confirm it clears your head and feet during slow practice turns.
  • Use a level, nonslip surface with clear space around and above you.
  • Start with short intervals and increase total jumping time gradually.
  • End the interval if you repeatedly catch the rope or lose landing control.

If you have current foot, ankle, Achilles tendon, or knee pain, choose a no-jump weight-shift drill or ask a physiotherapist before continuing.
