Boxing Cover

The boxing cover is a defensive movement that brings your hands and forearms close to your head to shield it. This non-contact drill practices guard control, balance, and shoulder endurance.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your non-dominant foot forward in a staggered stance, knees slightly bent.
  2. Raise your hands to cheek height in your normal guard.
  3. Tuck your chin slightly toward your chest.
  4. Bring your fists against your temples, with your forearms nearly vertical along the front and sides of your face.
  5. Return your hands to your normal guard to finish one repetition.

Form cues

  • Keep your eyes on the target.
  • Breathe out as you cover.
  • Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
  • Keep your weight centered.

Common mistakes

  • Elbows flaring outwardPoint your elbows toward the floor to keep the shield compact.
  • Folding forward at the waistKeep your torso upright rather than ducking your whole upper body behind your arms.
  • Dropping the hands after coveringEnd each repetition at cheek height instead of letting your hands fall toward your chest.

Safety

Forcefully squeezing into the cover or continuing when fatigued can irritate your shoulders or neck. A cover does not make head impacts safe.

  • Practice without punches or partner contact.
  • Start slowly rather than snapping your hands into your head.
  • End the set if you develop pain or can no longer control the arm movement.

If raising your arms causes shoulder or neck pain, use a smaller, comfortable range and seek advice from a physiotherapist before progressing.
