How to do it

  1. Stand near the center with your feet about shoulder-width apart, your non-dominant foot a short step forward.
  2. Raise your hands beside your cheeks with your elbows close to your ribs.
  3. Take a short step in your chosen direction with the foot closest to that direction.
  4. Move your other foot the same distance to restore your starting stance.
  5. Repeat forward, backward, and sideways steps between the center and open space near the ropes or corners for your timed interval.
  6. Finish by coming to a balanced stop in your boxing stance.

Form cues

  • Keep your knees soft.
  • Look toward your imagined opponent.
  • Keep your weight between your feet.
  • Keep your steps quiet.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing your feetKeep each foot on its own track rather than stepping across the other.
  • Taking long, reaching stepsShorten your steps so you can reverse direction without stumbling.
  • Bouncing high between stepsKeep your head at a nearly constant height rather than hopping with every movement.

Safety

Sudden direction changes on a slippery or uneven canvas can cause a fall or ankle strain. Backing into ropes or corner padding can also disrupt your balance.

  • Check that the canvas is dry, secure, and free of obstacles before starting.
  • Practice without contact, with enough clear space to move freely.
  • Change direction before reaching the ropes or corner padding.
  • Start at walking speed; end the interval if fatigue makes your foot placement unreliable.

If you have ankle, knee, or hip pain, or difficulty with balance, use slower steps in open space and seek advice if symptoms persist.
