Breaststroke Finish

The breaststroke finish is a short approach to the wall ending with a simultaneous two-hand touch. It trains stroke timing, distance judgment, and coordination of your final kick and reach.

  • Intermediate
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Position yourself two or three breaststroke cycles away from the wall, facing it.
  2. Swim toward the wall using your normal breaststroke rhythm.
  3. Complete your final kick with your arms extended forward.
  4. Glide toward the wall with your chest facing the bottom of the pool.
  5. Touch the wall with both hands simultaneously, keeping your hands separate.
  6. Let your elbows bend slightly as you come to a stop.

Form cues

  • Keep your hips near the surface
  • Exhale into the water
  • Keep your neck long

Common mistakes

  • One hand touches firstReach evenly through both shoulders rather than rotating one shoulder toward the wall.
  • Gliding from too far awayAdjust your approach strokes earlier so your final glide reaches the wall without losing most of your speed.
  • Squeezing in a cramped final strokeBegin your final reach while you still have room to extend your arms fully.

Safety

Misjudging the approach can jam your fingers or drive your head into the wall. Excessive speed increases the impact on your wrists and shoulders.

  • Use a lifeguarded pool with a clear approach and wall space.
  • Practice at an easy pace before adding speed.
  • Recover between attempts until your breathing is comfortable.
  • Check for approaching swimmers before leaving the wall.

If you cannot comfortably swim breaststroke and recover at the wall, practice in standing-depth water with qualified supervision first.
