Breaststroke with Tempo Trainer

Breaststroke with a tempo trainer uses timed beeps to guide your stroke rhythm. It practices consistent timing between the pull, kick, and glide while building swimming endurance.

How to do it

  1. Set the trainer to beep once per comfortable, complete stroke cycle.
  2. Secure the trainer beneath your swim cap near your ear, following its placement instructions.
  3. Push off the wall face down with your arms extended overhead.
  4. On a beep, sweep your hands outward through a small arc back toward your chest.
  5. Reach your hands forward together.
  6. Draw your heels toward your seat with your toes turned outward as your arms reach forward.
  7. Sweep your feet outward and backward in a curved kick that finishes with your legs together.
  8. Glide with your arms extended until the next beep starts another cycle.

Form cues

  • Inhale during the pull; exhale underwater.
  • Keep your knees about hip-width apart.
  • Let your head follow your body.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing every beepLengthen the beep interval if you must rush the kick or skip the glide to keep up.
  • Pulling past your shouldersKeep the hand sweep compact so your hands return forward without dragging beside your ribs.
  • Kicking against bent armsTime the strongest part of your kick for when your arms are nearly straight ahead.

Safety

An unsuitable tempo can disrupt breathing and accelerate fatigue, increasing the risk of distress in the water. Forcing a wide kick or excessive foot turnout can strain your knees.

  • Use a lifeguarded pool with a clear lane and follow its swimming direction.
  • Use only a comfortable kick range rather than forcing your feet farther outward.
  • Stop at the nearest wall if you develop pain, unusual breathlessness, or difficulty staying coordinated.
  • Approach the wall under control with both hands forward for the touch.

Choose ordinary breaststroke first if you cannot yet swim a pool length comfortably with coordinated breathing.
