Cable Shoulder Internal Rotation
Cable shoulder internal rotation trains the rotator cuff by turning your upper arm inward against light resistance while your elbow stays at your side.
- Beginner
- Isolation
- Low injury risk
- Rest 1 min
How to do it
- Set the cable pulley at elbow height.
- Stand sideways to the machine with your working shoulder closest to it.
- Grasp the handle with your nearest hand.
- Bend your elbow to 90 degrees with your upper arm resting against your side.
- Position your forearm slightly outward toward the machine.
- Rotate your upper arm inward to bring the handle across your abdomen.
- Return the handle to the starting position.
Form cues
- Keep your wrist straight.
- Let your shoulder stay relaxed.
- Keep the elbow bend unchanged.
Common mistakes
- Twisting your torsoKeep your chest facing forward so the movement comes from your shoulder rather than your waist.
- Elbow drifting awayHold a small folded towel gently between your upper arm and ribs to help keep your elbow in place.
- Letting the cable snap backTake about two seconds to return the handle instead of letting the weight pull your arm outward.
Safety
Too much resistance or forcing the outward return can strain or irritate the shoulder, especially as you fatigue.
- Start with the lightest resistance that lets you move smoothly.
- Use a comfortable range rather than chasing maximum rotation.
- Stop the set if you feel sharp pain, pinching, or catching.
If you have ongoing shoulder pain, a history of dislocation, or recent shoulder surgery, get guidance from a physiotherapist or doctor before adding resistance.
