How to do it

  1. Stand on a stable platform beneath the secured overhead support.
  2. Grasp the support with palms facing away, hands about shoulder-width apart.
  3. Lift your feet off the platform into a hang with straight elbows.
  4. Pull your upper chest toward the support by bending your elbows.
  5. Lower your body back to straight elbows.
  6. Return your feet to the platform after your final repetition.
  7. Release your grip once your weight is supported.

Form cues

  • Keep your ribs over your pelvis.
  • Keep your neck long.
  • Exhale as you pull.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging for momentumKeep your legs quiet and pause between repetitions until your body is still.
  • Collapsing into the bottom hangMaintain light shoulder tension at the bottom rather than letting your weight suddenly tug on your shoulders.
  • Dropping from the topTake two to three seconds to lower, using assistance if you cannot control the descent.

Safety

A slipping grip or unsecured support can cause a fall onto the Cadillac or floor. Fatigue and abrupt loading can strain your shoulders or elbows.

  • Have a qualified Pilates professional verify the hanging setup and directly supervise your first attempts.
  • Use only a fixed support approved by the apparatus manufacturer for full-bodyweight hanging; do not substitute a spring-loaded push-through or roll-down bar.
  • Check the support's locks and attachment points before each session, with the landing area clear.
  • End the set before your grip weakens, with a stable platform and assistance available for dismounting.

Choose an assisted version or seek guidance from a physiotherapist first if hanging causes pain or you have a history of shoulder instability.
