Cadillac Parakeet

The Cadillac Parakeet is a Pilates movement that combines a spring-assisted leg press with a rolling bridge. It trains abdominal control as you lift and lower your spine without losing control of the bar.

Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it

  1. Lie on your back with your head away from the push-through bar.
  2. Place the balls of your feet on the bar, hip-width apart, with your knees bent.
  3. Grasp the stable uprights beside you.
  4. Press the bar away from you until your legs are straight.
  5. Guide the bar upward with your legs extended.
  6. Peel your pelvis off the mat into a supported bridge, leaving your shoulders on the mat.
  7. Roll your spine back onto the mat from your upper back to your pelvis.
  8. Bend your knees to bring the bar back to the starting position.

Form cues

  • Exhale as your pelvis lifts.
  • Keep your knees soft, not locked.
  • Keep your chest open and neck relaxed.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the springs take overSlow the transition as the bar rises so you control its path rather than being pulled upward.
  • Lifting in one rigid blockStart with a small pelvic curl so the lift travels gradually through your spine.
  • Uneven pressure through the feetPress equally through both feet to keep the bar level and your pelvis centered.

Safety

The sprung push-through bar can recoil and strike you if your feet slip or you lose control. Lifting too high or collapsing under fatigue can overload your neck or lower back.

  • Have a qualified Pilates instructor set the springs and required safety strap for this version, check the attachments, and supervise your first sessions.
  • Maintain secure foot contact throughout the movement; have the bar secured before removing your feet.
  • Limit the lift so your body weight never shifts onto your neck.
  • End the set if you cannot control the bar or keep your pelvis steady.

If you have neck or back pain, osteoporosis, or a recent spinal injury, get advice from a physiotherapist or doctor before attempting the rolling bridge.
