Cadillac Push-Through Bar Swan
The Cadillac Push-Through Bar Swan is a supported Pilates backbend using a spring-loaded bar. It trains controlled spinal extension, back strength, and hip support while your pelvis stays on the mat.
- Intermediate
- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Lie face down on the Cadillac mat, facing the push-through bar with your legs extended behind you.
- Grasp the secured bar with your hands about shoulder-width apart.
- Reach your arms long against the bar's resistance.
- Lift your chest into a small backbend with your pelvis resting on the mat.
- Lower your chest to the mat along the same path.
Form cues
- Reach forward through your breastbone
- Keep the back of your neck long
- Draw your lower belly gently inward
- Breathe throughout the movement
Common mistakes
- Hinging at the lower backUse a smaller lift so the curve spreads through your upper back instead of concentrating at your waist.
- Shrugging toward the earsKeep space between your shoulders and ears as you press into the bar.
- Lifting the legsKeep your thighs supported rather than kicking upward to gain height.
Safety
The spring-loaded bar can recoil into your head or upper body if your grip slips or you release it under tension. Excessive backbend depth can strain your lower back, especially as you fatigue.
- Have a qualified Pilates instructor set the spring resistance and directly supervise the exercise.
- Check the bar, spring clips, and attachment points before use; fit the safety strap when required for the apparatus configuration.
- Keep control of the bar throughout its return, releasing it only once it is safely secured.
- End the set if you feel pinching or lose smooth movement.
If you have back, neck, or shoulder pain, get advice from a physiotherapist before attempting this spring-loaded backbend.
