Cadillac Roll-Down Bar Swan

The Cadillac Roll-Down Bar Swan is a Pilates backbend performed face down with a spring-loaded bar. It trains controlled spinal extension and back strength with support from your glutes.

  • Intermediate
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Lie face down with your head toward the spring attachments and your legs extended along the mat.
  2. Grasp the roll-down bar evenly with an overhand grip, arms reaching forward.
  3. Press the bar toward the mat with your arms long.
  4. Lift your chest into a small backbend with your pelvis resting on the mat.
  5. Lower your chest to the mat.
  6. Guide the bar back to its starting position against the springs.

Form cues

  • Reach your breastbone forward.
  • Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
  • Gently draw your lower belly inward.
  • Inhale up; exhale down.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing height through your lower backUse a smaller lift that spreads the curve through your upper back rather than hinging at your waist.
  • Throwing your head backLet your gaze travel with your chest so your neck follows the curve of your spine.
  • Pulling unevenly on the barApply equal pressure through both hands so the bar stays level.

Safety

Excessive extension or fatigue can strain your lower back. A lost grip or uncontrolled spring return can make the bar recoil toward you.

  • Have a qualified Pilates professional set the spring attachment height and tension and supervise your first attempts.
  • Check that the bar, springs, and clips are secure before starting.
  • Keep your grip until the bar is supported and spring tension is safely managed.
  • End the set if you feel pinching or cannot control the spring return.

If back or shoulder pain limits this position, get advice from a physiotherapist before attempting the spring-loaded version.
