Cadillac Side Bend trains the side abdominal muscles through controlled sideways bending. This guide covers a seated version using the fixed frame for light support, without springs or a moving bar.

- Isolation
- Low injury risk
- Rest 30 sec
How to do it
- Sit cross-legged on the Cadillac mat beside a fixed upright, within comfortable arm’s reach.
- Hold the upright with your nearer hand at about shoulder height.
- Reach your free arm overhead.
- Bend your torso toward the upright through a comfortable range.
- Return your torso to upright with control.
- Lower your free arm to finish.
Form cues
- Keep your chest facing forward.
- Let your supporting hand stay light.
- Exhale into the bend.
Common mistakes
- Lifting one hipShorten the bend so both sitting bones remain grounded.
- Collapsing toward the supportReach your upper arm upward before curving sideways to keep length through your waist.
- Shrugging the raised shoulderKeep space between your shoulder and ear, even if that means lowering your arm slightly.
Safety
Forcing the sideways bend can strain your back or irritate your shoulder. Using a moving bar as though it were fixed can cause an unexpected loss of support.
- Check that your handhold is a secure part of the fixed frame.
- Choose a seated position with enough mat space to stay well away from the edge.
- Keep unused bars and springs secured outside your movement path.
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, pinching, or tingling.
Choose a standing version if sitting cross-legged is uncomfortable; seek advice from a physiotherapist first if you have ongoing back or shoulder pain.
