Carioca Drill

The carioca drill is a sideways traveling drill with alternating front and rear crossover steps. It trains lateral footwork, hip coordination, and balance for changes of direction.

  • Beginner
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 30 sec

How to do it

  1. Stand with your right side facing the direction of travel, feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step sideways with your right foot.
  3. Cross your left foot in front of your right foot.
  4. Step sideways again with your right foot.
  5. Cross your left foot behind your right foot.
  6. Repeat this alternating crossover pattern along the lane.
  7. Switch to slower, ordinary side steps near the endpoint.
  8. Stop with your feet hip-width apart.

Form cues

  • Keep your knees soft.
  • Let your hips rotate naturally.
  • Keep your chest mostly facing forward.
  • Let your arms counterbalance your steps.

Common mistakes

  • Taking oversized crossover stepsUse compact steps that keep your feet close beneath your body.
  • Bouncing upwardKeep your head at a nearly constant height as you travel sideways.
  • Looking down throughoutLook ahead once you learn the pattern so you stay aware of your surroundings.

Safety

Clipping your feet together can cause a trip or ankle roll, especially at speed. Turning over a firmly planted foot can strain your knee.

  • Place cones outside a clear, level lane with extra room to slow down.
  • Learn the pattern at walking speed before increasing your pace.
  • Allow each foot to lift or turn with your body rather than twisting over a fixed foot.
  • End the set when fatigue makes your foot placement unreliable.

Use ordinary side steps if crossover steps feel unstable, and seek professional advice first if you have ongoing ankle, knee, or hip pain.
