Cast to Handstand
The cast to handstand is a gymnastics skill that takes you from front support on a bar into a vertical handstand. It develops shoulder strength, straight-arm support, and whole-body control.
Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it
- Start in front support with straight arms, the bar against your upper thighs, and your thumbs wrapped around the rail.
- Bring your legs slightly forward beneath the bar.
- Lean your shoulders slightly ahead of your hands.
- Swing your legs backward and upward from your hips.
- Open your shoulders as you extend into a handstand above the bar.
- Briefly hold a straight line from your hands through your shoulders, hips, and feet.
- Lower your body back along the same arc into front support.
Form cues
- Push tall through the bar.
- Keep your ribs tucked.
- Squeeze your legs together.
- Look between your hands.
Common mistakes
- Throwing the heels into an archLet your hips rise with your legs rather than lifting your feet by bending your lower back.
- Bending the elbows during the castReduce the cast height until you can maintain straight-arm support throughout.
- Driving past verticalUse less swing so you can stop at the handstand rather than tipping over the rail.
Safety
Losing your grip or tipping past vertical can cause a fall onto your head, neck, or shoulders. Fatigue and poorly controlled swings also increase stress on your wrists and shoulders.
- Practice only under qualified gymnastics supervision with a trained spotter.
- Check that the bars are secure, rail spacing is appropriate, and landing mats cover the fall area.
- Establish reliable lower casts and bar handstand control before attempting the full skill.
- Learn an assisted return and an appropriate fall response before casting to vertical.
If you have wrist, elbow, shoulder, or back pain, or cannot comfortably support yourself with straight arms, use a lower cast and seek professional guidance before progressing.
