Coach Mitt Roll-and-Counter

The mitt roll-and-counter pairs a defensive roll beneath a simulated hook with a controlled punch to a mitt. It develops boxing timing, balance, and coordinated punching.

  • Intermediate
  • Compound
  • Moderate injury risk
  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Face the mitt holder in a staggered boxing stance, with your usual lead foot forward.
  2. Bring your gloves beside your cheeks.
  3. Bend your knees as the holder gives a slow, non-contact hook cue.
  4. Move your head beneath the cue in a shallow U-shaped path toward the opposite side.
  5. Rise back to your normal stance height.
  6. Throw the agreed counterpunch into the presented mitt.
  7. Return your punching hand to guard.

Form cues

  • Keep your eyes on the holder’s chest.
  • Keep your chin tucked.
  • Exhale sharply with the counter.
  • Keep your weight inside your feet.

Common mistakes

  • Folding forward at the waistLower through your knees and hips while keeping your torso relatively upright.
  • Rolling too deepUse only enough depth to clear the simulated hook without dropping into a full squat.
  • Reaching for the counterReset the distance if you cannot reach the mitt without leaning beyond your base.
  • Punching before the target is readyWait for a clearly presented mitt rather than guessing its position.

Safety

Mistimed hook cues can cause accidental head contact. Hard counters with a bent wrist or poorly positioned target can strain your hand, wrist, or shoulder.

  • Work with a trained mitt holder who keeps every hook cue outside contact range, even if you miss the roll.
  • Agree on the cue direction, counterpunch, and stop signal before starting.
  • Secure your hand wraps and gloves before striking.
  • Begin at walking pace with light punches; end the set when timing or control deteriorates.

If rolling or punching causes knee, back, shoulder, or wrist pain, use a pain-free, no-impact version and seek advice from a physiotherapist before progressing.
