How to do it
- Lie on your back with your legs extended comfortably apart.
- Place your arms slightly away from your sides, palms facing up.
- Allow your feet to fall outward naturally.
- Rest in this position for the planned time.
- Gently wiggle your fingers and toes to end the hold.
- Roll onto one side.
- Press yourself up slowly into a seated position.
Form cues
- Let your jaw soften.
- Leave your breathing unforced.
- Let the floor take your weight.
Common mistakes
- Trying to empty your mindWhen thoughts arise, gently return your attention to the sensations of your body resting.
- Forcing yourself to stay stillMake a small position adjustment if discomfort distracts you rather than enduring it.
Safety
Lying flat with insufficient support can aggravate neck or lower-back discomfort. Getting up abruptly after resting may cause lightheadedness.
- Use a mat or folded blanket to cushion a hard floor.
- Place support beneath your knees or a thin folded towel beneath your head if needed for comfort.
- End the hold if you experience pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty, or distress.
If you are pregnant or cannot lie flat comfortably, choose a supported side-lying position instead.
