Cycling Ergometer
The cycling ergometer is a stationary bike used for cardiovascular conditioning and leg endurance. You pedal against adjustable resistance while tracking time and distance.
- Beginner
- Low injury risk
- No rest timer
How to do it
- Adjust the saddle so your knee stays slightly bent with the pedal at its lowest point.
- Secure your feet on the pedals with the balls of your feet over the pedal centers.
- Begin pedaling at low resistance.
- Continue pedaling at a steady effort for your chosen duration or distance.
- Ease your effort for the final few minutes.
- Wait until the pedals stop completely.
- Release your feet from any straps or clips.
- Step off using the bike's supports for balance.
Form cues
- Keep your shoulders relaxed.
- Keep a light grip.
- Breathe steadily throughout.
Common mistakes
- Bouncing in the saddleSlow your pedaling until your hips stay settled on the seat.
- Knees drifting inward or outwardKeep each knee tracking in line with its foot throughout the pedal stroke.
- Grinding against excessive resistanceReduce resistance if each stroke becomes a slow, forceful push rather than a smooth rotation.
Safety
Poor bike fit or too much resistance can irritate your knees or back over repeated pedal strokes. Dismounting with moving pedals or secured feet can cause a fall.
- Check that the bike is stable and its seat adjustment is locked before riding.
- Locate the resistance and stop controls before starting.
- Set the handlebars within comfortable reach without rounding your back excessively.
- Increase duration and resistance gradually rather than both at once.
If cycling worsens existing knee, hip, or back pain, choose a shorter, easier session or seek advice from a physiotherapist before continuing.
