Deep-Water Double-Knee Twist
The deep-water double-knee twist is a flotation-belt-supported exercise that moves your tucked knees from side to side, training your abdominal muscles to control rotation while you stay upright.
- Intermediate
- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Secure the flotation belt snugly around your waist according to its instructions.
- Float upright in deep water with your arms out to the sides for balance.
- Draw both knees together toward your chest to a comfortable height.
- Rotate your bent knees toward one side.
- Bring your knees back to center.
- Rotate your bent knees toward the opposite side.
- Return your knees to center.
- Extend your legs beneath you to finish upright.
Form cues
- Keep your shoulders level and facing forward.
- Keep your belly gently firm.
- Breathe steadily throughout.
Common mistakes
- Swinging through the twistMove slowly enough to stop at any point without drifting farther around.
- Leaning backward during the tuckKeep your knees lower so your chest stays over your hips.
- Knees drifting apartMove your legs as a single unit rather than pedaling them separately.
Safety
Forceful rotation can strain your lower back, especially as you fatigue. Losing balance in deep water can submerge your face; an aquatic exercise belt is not a life jacket.
- Practice only if you are comfortable in deep water, with a lifeguard present and an easy exit nearby.
- Test the belt's support beside the pool wall before moving away.
- End the set if the belt rides up or you struggle to keep your mouth above water.
- Use a pain-free turning range rather than forcing a larger twist.
Choose a shallow-water version if you cannot stay upright comfortably, and seek advice from a physiotherapist first if trunk rotation causes back or hip pain.
