Deep-Water Sit Kick
The deep-water sit kick uses a flotation belt to support a seated position while you alternate forward kicks against water resistance. It trains the front of your thighs, hip flexors, and trunk control.
- Intermediate
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Fasten your flotation belt snugly around your waist.
- Enter deep water using the pool steps or ladder.
- Bring your knees forward into a seated floating position with your chest upright.
- Extend your right leg forward through the water.
- Bend your right knee back to the starting position.
- Extend your left leg forward through the water.
- Bend your left knee back to the starting position.
- After your final repetition, lower your legs beneath you to return to vertical floating.
Form cues
- Keep your shoulders relaxed.
- Breathe steadily through each kick.
- Keep your belly gently firm.
Common mistakes
- Rocking backward with each kickShorten your kicks until you can keep your torso still.
- Snapping the knee straightSlow the end of each extension, stopping just short of locking your knee.
- Letting the thighs dropKeep your thighs angled forward so the movement stays seated rather than becoming a vertical flutter kick.
Safety
Fatigue, leaning too far back, or a shifting belt can tip your face into the water, creating a drowning risk. An exercise flotation belt is not a life jacket.
- Use a lifeguard-supervised pool with enough clear space for your kicks.
- Practice the seated balance within reach of the pool wall before moving away from support.
- Stop kicking and grasp the wall if your belt shifts, breathing becomes uncontrolled, or your face approaches the water.
- End the set before fatigue prevents you from returning to an upright position.
If you cannot float comfortably or recover to an upright position in deep water, choose a shallow-water exercise first.
