How to do it

  1. Stand facing the bag with your non-dominant foot forward, feet about shoulder-width apart, just within straight-punch range.
  2. Raise your gloves beside your cheeks with your elbows close to your ribs.
  3. Punch the center of the bag with your lead hand.
  4. Return that glove to your cheek as the bag rebounds.
  5. Strike the returning bag with your rear hand, rotating through your rear hip.
  6. Return your rear glove to your cheek.
  7. Continue alternating straight punches for the timed interval, allowing the rebound to set your rhythm.
  8. Step clear of the rebound path when the interval ends.

Form cues

  • Keep your chin slightly tucked
  • Keep wrists straight at contact
  • Exhale briefly with each punch
  • Keep your knees soft

Common mistakes

  • Chasing every reboundLet an awkward rebound pass rather than lunging after the bag.
  • Punching too hardUse light, controlled contact so the bag's movement stays predictable.
  • Locking the elbowSet your distance so your elbow remains slightly bent at contact.

Safety

Mistimed contact can strain your wrist or elbow, especially as fatigue reduces control. The rebounding bag can strike your face, and a loose anchor or damaged cord can release under tension.

  • Check both anchors, cords, connections, and bag inflation against the equipment instructions before each session.
  • Wear properly fitted hand wraps and boxing training gloves.
  • Keep the full rebound area clear of other people and obstacles.
  • Let the bag settle on its own before adjustments; never grab moving cords.

If punching causes hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder pain, switch to pain-free shadow boxing and seek advice from a physiotherapist before resuming bag work.
