- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 1 min 30 sec
How to do it
- Stand between two matching dumbbells placed beside your feet.
- Lower yourself toward the handles by bending your hips and knees.
- Grasp each handle with your palm facing inward.
- Stand upright with the dumbbells at your sides.
- Walk forward at a steady pace for the planned time.
- Change direction using several small steps if needed.
- Come to a complete stop.
- Lower the dumbbells to the floor by bending your hips and knees.
Form cues
- Brace your belly as you walk.
- Keep your eyes level.
- Breathe steadily behind your brace.
- Let your arms hang long.
Common mistakes
- Shrugging throughout the carryKeep your shoulders relaxed rather than pulling them toward your ears.
- Taking oversized stridesUse shorter steps so each foot lands close beneath you.
- Swinging the dumbbellsSlow your pace until the weights stay quiet beside your thighs.
Safety
A fatigued grip can let a dumbbell fall onto your foot. Loads that pull you out of position can strain your back during the pickup, walk, or set-down.
- Use a clear, level route with room to turn and set the weights down.
- Start with a load you can carry without leaning sideways or backward.
- End the carry before your fingers begin slipping off the handles.
If carrying causes back, shoulder, or hand pain, choose a lighter version or seek advice from a physiotherapist before continuing.
