- Isolation
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 1 min
How to do it
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding one dumbbell beside your thigh with your arm straight.
- Bend your torso a short distance toward the dumbbell, letting it travel down the outside of your thigh.
- Return your torso to upright.
Form cues
- Keep your hips still.
- Face your shoulders straight ahead.
- Exhale as you rise.
Common mistakes
- Leaning forwardKeep your chest aligned over your hips so the bend stays sideways.
- Swinging the weightTake two to three seconds to lower the dumbbell before smoothly reversing direction.
Safety
Heavy loading or forcing a deep sideways bend can strain your lower back, especially as fatigue reduces control.
- Start with a light dumbbell before increasing the load gradually.
- Stop if you feel sharp pain or pinching in your back.
- End the set when you can no longer control the movement.
If you have ongoing back pain or a recent spinal injury, ask a physiotherapist or doctor before adding loaded side bends.
