Dumbbell Z Press
The Dumbbell Z Press is an overhead press performed seated on the floor with your legs extended. It trains your shoulders and triceps while your trunk holds you upright without back support or leg drive.
Higher injury risk. Read the safety notes before adding weight.

How to do it
- Sit on the floor with your legs extended in a comfortable V.
- Bring the dumbbells to shoulder height with your palms facing forward and elbows slightly ahead of your torso.
- Sit tall over your hips.
- Press the dumbbells overhead until your elbows straighten, finishing with your upper arms beside your ears.
- Lower the dumbbells under control to shoulder height.
- After your final repetition, place the dumbbells on the floor beside your hips.
Form cues
- Brace your belly before each press.
- Keep wrists stacked over elbows.
- Let shoulder blades rotate upward.
- Exhale as you press.
Common mistakes
- Leaning back to finishUse a lighter weight that lets you keep your ribs over your pelvis throughout the press.
- Slumping on the floorSit on a firm, low pad if tightness behind your thighs prevents an upright position.
- Pressing too far forwardGuide the dumbbells upward to finish over your shoulders rather than out in front of your face.
Safety
A failed repetition can leave a dumbbell falling toward your head or body. The unsupported floor position makes it harder to recover your balance when fatigue or excessive weight disrupts the press.
- Start with weights you can bring to your shoulders and return to the floor without struggling.
- Keep the floor around your legs clear of loose equipment.
- End the set before you need to twist or rock to complete a repetition.
- Stop if you feel shoulder or back pain.
Choose a back-supported seated press if you cannot maintain the floor position comfortably, and seek professional advice first if you have an existing shoulder or back injury.
