How to do it
- Position the dummy upright, facing you.
- Establish a two-handed grip on the dummy’s right arm and upper torso.
- Step your left foot just outside the dummy’s right foot.
- Tip the dummy toward its right rear corner, over its right heel.
- Swing your right leg forward past the dummy’s right leg.
- Sweep your right leg backward against the back of the dummy’s right leg.
- Guide the dummy’s upper body backward onto the mat with your grips.
Form cues
- Keep your chest close
- Hinge forward, don't round
- Exhale through the reap
Common mistakes
- Reaping before breaking balanceShift the dummy’s weight backward before your reaping leg makes contact.
- Kicking instead of reapingUse a continuous backward leg swing rather than a sharp strike at the knee.
- Planting too far awayPlace your supporting foot close enough that you can reach the dummy without stretching or hopping.
Safety
A heavy dummy can pull you into an uncontrolled fall or twist your supporting knee if your body turns over a fixed foot. Fatigue and awkward lifting during resets can also strain your lower back.
- Use an intact throwing mat with a clear landing area large enough for both you and the dummy.
- Start with a light dummy you can control throughout the throw.
- Keep your supporting knee aligned with your toes; reposition rather than twisting over a planted foot.
- Reset using your hips and knees with the dummy close to you, and stop when you cannot maintain control.
Choose an unloaded entry drill first if you cannot balance on one leg comfortably; seek physiotherapist advice if knee, hip, or back symptoms affect the movement.
