Eggbeater Kick

The eggbeater kick uses alternating circular leg movements to keep you upright in water. It trains hip and leg endurance for treading water without bouncing up and down.

How to do it

  1. Hold the pool wall with one hand while facing into the pool.
  2. Bring your knees up and apart into a seated position beneath the water.
  3. Sweep your right foot outward, forward, inward, and back in a roughly horizontal circle.
  4. Circle your left foot in the opposite direction, starting half a cycle behind your right foot.
  5. Release the wall once your alternating kicks support you at the surface.
  6. Maintain the alternating circles for your interval, using small side-to-side hand sweeps for extra support as needed.
  7. Grasp the wall to end the interval.

Form cues

  • Keep your chest quiet.
  • Feel water pressure through your soles.
  • Breathe steadily.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking both legs togetherTime the circles so one foot sweeps inward while the other sweeps outward.
  • Pedaling like a bicycleTrace wide, flat circles with your feet rather than pumping them vertically.
  • Forcing the knees widerUse a comfortable thigh angle that lets your hips rotate without twisting your knees.

Safety

Losing support in deep water can put your airway underwater and lead to drowning, especially when fatigue disrupts your rhythm. Forceful circles can also strain your knees or groin.

  • Practice in a lifeguarded pool; never train alone.
  • Learn with wall support where you can stand before attempting deep water, which requires independent swimming ability.
  • Keep your wall grip until you can consistently hold your mouth above water without struggling.
  • Return to support immediately if you lose height, become breathless, cramp, or feel pain.

If you have hip, groin, or knee pain, use a supported version with smaller circles and seek advice from a physiotherapist before progressing.
