How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent.
  2. Place your hands on your hips.
  3. Slowly turn your torso and pelvis a small distance to the left.
  4. Return to face forward.
  5. Slowly turn your torso and pelvis a small distance to the right.
  6. Return to your starting position.

Form cues

  • Breathe naturally throughout.
  • Keep your head over your hips.
  • Let your shoulders stay relaxed.

Common mistakes

  • Twisting through planted kneesAllow a small foot pivot with the turn so your knees stay aligned with your toes.
  • Swinging with momentumUse an even pace that lets you pause comfortably at any point.
  • Turning the head farther than the bodyLet your gaze follow your chest rather than looking behind you.

Safety

Forcing the turn can irritate your knees or lower back. Turning farther than you can control can also cause a loss of balance.

  • Practice on a clear, level, nonslip surface.
  • Use a smaller turn with light support from a sturdy chair if you feel unsteady.
  • Stop if you feel pain or dizziness.

If you have ongoing knee or back pain, or recurrent balance problems, ask a physiotherapist about a suitable range and stance before practicing.
