Eight Brocades Touching Toes Then Bending Backward

Eight Brocades Touching Toes Then Bending Backward is a gentle standing mobility exercise that alternates a forward fold with a small backbend to stretch the backs of your legs and move your spine.

  • Low injury risk
  • No rest timer

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Fold forward from your hips, reaching your hands down your legs toward your feet.
  3. Return to upright standing.
  4. Place your hands against your lower back.
  5. Lift your chest into a slight backward bend.
  6. Return to neutral standing to finish the repetition.

Form cues

  • Keep your knees soft.
  • Breathe freely throughout.
  • Keep your weight balanced over both feet.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing a toe touchStop at a mild stretch, even if your hands only reach your thighs or shins.
  • Bouncing at the bottomUse one smooth movement into and out of the forward fold.
  • Throwing your head backwardKeep your neck aligned with your upper back rather than letting your head drop behind you.

Safety

Forcing either bend can irritate your lower back or strain the backs of your legs. Rising too quickly from the forward fold may cause lightheadedness and loss of balance.

  • Begin with shallow bends before gradually exploring more range.
  • Rise slowly from the fold, pausing upright if you feel lightheaded.
  • Stop if you feel sharp pain, tingling, or pain traveling down a leg.

If you have ongoing back pain, a recent spine injury, or balance problems, ask a physiotherapist or doctor about a suitable modification first.
