How to do it

  1. Squat with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  2. Slide your shoulders beneath your inner thighs.
  3. Plant your palms just behind your heels, with your fingers pointing forward.
  4. Lift your feet off the mat with your thighs resting high on your upper arms.
  5. Extend your legs forward into a wide V.
  6. Hold the balance with your arms straight and your hips low.
  7. Bend your knees toward your chest.
  8. Lower your feet gently to the mat.

Form cues

  • Spread your fingers wide.
  • Push the floor away.
  • Look slightly forward.
  • Keep your breath steady.

Common mistakes

  • Thighs sliding toward the elbowsPosition your upper arms farther beneath your thighs before lifting off.
  • Forcing the knees straightKeep a slight knee bend if extending fully pulls strongly behind your thighs or disrupts your balance.
  • Jumping into the balanceTransfer your weight gradually until your feet become light enough to float off the floor.

Safety

A loss of balance can cause a fall onto your hips or overload your wrists and shoulders. Forcing straight legs before you have enough mobility can strain your hamstrings.

  • Warm up your wrists with gentle weight shifts before attempting the pose.
  • Practice on a stable, nonslip mat with clear space around you.
  • End the hold when your elbows begin to buckle or your hands lose firm contact.
  • Practice the foot-supported setup until you can control the weight transfer without pain.

If you have wrist, elbow, shoulder, or hamstring pain or a recent injury, choose a foot-supported version and seek advice from a physiotherapist before attempting the full balance.
