Focus Mitt Defense-and-Return Drill
The focus mitt defense-and-return drill pairs a defensive movement with a return punch into a partner’s mitt. It trains reaction timing, balance, and coordinated punching.
- Intermediate
- Compound
- Moderate injury risk
- Rest 45 sec
How to do it
- Agree with your mitt holder on a small slip followed by one straight return punch.
- Stand facing the holder with your feet staggered, about shoulder-width apart, and knees slightly bent.
- Raise your gloves beside your cheeks with your elbows near your ribs.
- Shift your head slightly off center in response to the holder’s agreed visual cue.
- Throw a straight punch into the return mitt when the holder presents it within reach.
- Retract your punching hand to your cheek.
- Return to your starting stance for the next cue.
Form cues
- Keep your chin tucked.
- Keep your wrist straight at impact.
- Let your hips turn with the punch.
- Exhale briefly on the return punch.
Common mistakes
- Bending far sidewaysKeep your weight between your feet so the slip does not pull you off balance.
- Guessing the cueWait to recognize the holder’s signal before starting your defense.
- Reaching for a distant targetReset the distance with your partner rather than leaning forward or locking your elbow.
Safety
Poor wrist alignment or a missed target can strain your wrist, elbow, or shoulder. Rushed or unclear cues can lead to accidental punches to the holder.
- Work with an experienced mitt holder in a clear area.
- Secure your hand wraps and gloves before starting.
- Keep defensive cues non-contact, with punches directed only at clearly presented mitts.
- Start at low speed and light power; stop the set when timing or accuracy breaks down.
If you have wrist, shoulder, neck, or balance problems, use slow, punch-free defense practice or seek guidance from a physiotherapist before adding impact.
