Four-Point Reflex Pivot Counter

The four-point reflex pivot counter is a boxing drill that pairs a turn away from a rebounding target with a straight counterpunch. It trains reaction timing, footwork, and punching coordination.

  • Rest 45 sec

How to do it

  1. Take a staggered boxing stance within straight-punch reach of the target.
  2. Raise your gloves beside your cheeks.
  3. Tap the target with a light lead-hand straight punch.
  4. Return your lead glove to your cheek.
  5. Pivot on your lead forefoot, sweeping your rear foot through a short arc out of the diagonal return path.
  6. Face the target from your new angle.
  7. Deliver a controlled straight counterpunch as the target comes within reach.
  8. Return your punching hand to guard.

Form cues

  • Keep your eyes on the target.
  • Stay loose through your shoulders.
  • Keep your wrist aligned with your forearm.
  • Exhale briefly on the counter.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing your feetKeep your rear foot on its own side of your stance throughout the pivot.
  • Chasing the reboundWait for the target to enter punching range rather than leaning forward to reach it.
  • Turning too farUse only enough rotation to clear the return while keeping the target in front of you.

Safety

A mistimed pivot can put your face in the target’s return path or move you into a tension line. Forceful, poorly aligned punches can strain your wrist, while turning over a planted foot can stress your knee.

  • Check all four tension lines, anchors, and the target before starting; keep your movement area clear of the lines.
  • Wear securely fitted hand wraps and training gloves.
  • Begin with slow, light contacts; stop the set if you cannot track the rebound or maintain balance.
  • Let the target settle without grabbing it, and step clear before making adjustments.

If pivoting or punching causes knee, ankle, wrist, or shoulder pain, choose a slower, pain-free drill and seek advice from a physiotherapist before progressing.
