How to do it

  1. Face the bag just outside punching range, with your feet staggered and your hands beside your cheeks.
  2. Take a small sideways step around the bag with the foot nearest your direction of travel.
  3. Follow with your other foot to restore your stance width.
  4. Repeat these steps along a short arc to reach a new angle.
  5. Settle into a balanced stance within straight-punch range.
  6. Throw one controlled lead-hand straight punch at the bag around shoulder height.
  7. Return your punching hand to your cheek.
  8. Step back out of punching range.

Form cues

  • Keep your chin tucked.
  • Exhale briefly on the punch.
  • Keep your knees soft.
  • Line your knuckles up with your forearm.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing your feetUse small step-and-follow movements so your feet never pass across each other.
  • Reaching for the bagAdjust your distance before punching rather than leaning your torso toward the target.
  • Pushing through contactMake brief contact instead of leaving your glove pressed against the bag.

Safety

Hard or off-center contact can strain your hand, wrist, or shoulder. The projecting base and rebounding bag can trip you or knock you off balance as you circle.

  • Wear securely fitted hand wraps and boxing training gloves.
  • Check that the base is filled as instructed, stable, and undamaged.
  • Clear the entire route around the bag, leaving room for your feet outside the base.
  • Begin with light contact; if the bag rocks into your path, step clear until it settles.

If hand, wrist, shoulder, or ankle pain affects punching or circling, use pain-free footwork without contact or seek advice from a physiotherapist first.
