The Freestyle Early Vertical Forearm Scull uses small hand sweeps with bent elbows to practice the freestyle catch. It trains control of your hands and forearms as they press against the water.

How to do it

  1. Float face down with your arms reaching forward slightly wider than your shoulders.
  2. Bend your elbows so your fingertips point toward the pool bottom, with your elbows closer to the surface than your hands.
  3. Sweep your hands outward a few inches with your palms angled slightly outward.
  4. Sweep your hands inward with your palms angled slightly inward.
  5. Repeat these short sweeps for the planned distance while keeping your upper arms nearly still.
  6. Return to easy freestyle to reach the wall.

Form cues

  • Feel water pressure along your forearms.
  • Keep your wrists nearly straight.
  • Let your neck stay relaxed.
  • Use a gentle kick for balance.

Common mistakes

  • Elbows dropping toward your ribsReduce the force of each sweep until you can keep your elbows forward above your hands.
  • Turning each sweep into a pullMove your hands sideways through a short arc rather than pulling them back toward your hips.
  • Forcing a vertical forearmUse a comfortable elbow bend rather than twisting your shoulders to point your forearms straight down.

Safety

Forcing the bent-arm position or sculling hard while fatigued can strain your shoulders. Slow forward movement can also make breathing harder, creating a water-safety risk if you become breathless.

  • Practice in a lifeguarded pool with enough lane space for slower drill work.
  • Use a swim snorkel only if you are comfortable with it; otherwise, interrupt the drill with normal freestyle strokes to breathe.
  • Stop at the wall before fatigue disrupts your position, and stop the drill if your shoulders hurt.

If you cannot float comfortably or swim a full pool length, build those skills before attempting this drill.
