How to do it

  1. Begin swimming easy freestyle with your body close to the surface.
  2. Pull one hand underwater toward your hip.
  3. Lift that elbow out of the water, leaving your fingertips near the surface.
  4. Move your elbow forward with your fingertips lightly skimming the water.
  5. Place your fingertips into the water ahead of you.
  6. Extend that arm forward underwater.
  7. Repeat the recovery with your opposite arm, alternating strokes for the length.
  8. Finish at the wall with a controlled touch.

Form cues

  • Let your torso roll with each stroke.
  • Keep your kick small and steady.
  • Exhale underwater; turn sideways to inhale.
  • Keep your wrist loose.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing the elbow upwardUse a comfortable elbow height rather than lifting your shoulder toward your ear.
  • Dragging the whole handLet only your fingertips brush the surface without pressing down on the water.
  • Crossing the center lineEnter each hand in line with its shoulder rather than in front of your head.

Safety

A forced recovery or continuing through fatigue can strain your shoulder. Losing breathing control while concentrating on the drill creates a drowning risk.

  • Practice in a lifeguarded pool with a clear lane.
  • Keep each length short enough to reach the wall comfortably.
  • Stop the drill if you develop shoulder pain or cannot maintain comfortable breathing.
  • Follow the lane’s swimming direction and leave space from other swimmers.

If you cannot swim a full length of freestyle comfortably, build that skill first; seek physiotherapy advice before trying this drill if shoulder pain limits your arm recovery.
